weworemasks.com interview: innerpartysystem (july 3, 2009)

i can’t speak for myself, but i can speak for a lot of buzz about this band’s live show. i’ve been hearing nothing but great things, so if you are brave enough to endure a warped tour, be sure to see this band’s set.

thanks to somebody at the venue who fucked up, their posted 12:30 set time ended up being a lie, because i strolled to their stage around 12:35 and ended up completely missing their set. definitely a huge bummer cause they were one of four reasons i attended the warped tour in the first place. win some, lose some though.

closing in, here’s part IV of the warped tour interviews. i got the chance to sit down with three members of innerpartysystem to chat it up for a few minutes about getting dropped from island, plans for the future and hip-hop music.

hit the jump for the interview.

Roshan Bhatt, weworemasks.com
: Alright, let’s do it. What’s your name and position in innerpartysystem?

Jared Piccone, innerpartysystem: I’m Jared, I play the drums.

Patrick Nissy, innerpartysystem: Patrick and I sing.

Kris Barman, innerpartysystem: Kris, I play guitar and keys.

WWM: Is this your first time on Warped Tour?

All: Yeah!

WWM: And the whole tour, right?

PN: Yep.

WWM: Cool, so how’s it going so far?

JP: It’s good man. A lot of work.

PN: When it’s this hot, it’s really hard.

JP: It’s hard to get into that routine of getting up early than you want and doing more work than you want.

WWM: You’ve been playing early every day or something?

JP: Nah not necessarily. It’s still a lottery.

WWM: Word. On the message boards and what have you, people have been responding really well to your Warped Tour sets. How does it feel to get such a good response?

JP: It’s very exciting. It’s the whole point, you know?

PN: It’s cool when kids will say “You’re the best band I’ve seen all day,” and there’s a lot of great bands on this tour. So it’s a huge compliment to us to hear something like that.

WWM: Caught any great sets?

JP: Oh yeah.

PN: Yeah.

WWM: Who have you enjoyed the most so far?

KB: I think we all wanna say P.O.S.

PN: He’s sick. There’s a guy named Shad [K.] who has been playing our stage, he’s really good.

WWM: Well, shit. I missed his set because I was just watching The Ataris. He’s great though, I really like his album The Old Prince.

JP: Underoath are some of our good friends and put on one of the best live shows ever.

WWM: You guys just announced the split with Island Records. What’s next for the band as far as record labels and what not go?

PN: We don’t know. I think we’re just going to be independant for a while now. There’s no rules so we can kind of make whatever we want and do whatever we want. We have a minimal, but a really good fanbase building up. Overseas and in the US.

JP: That was basically the point of having the label anyway. To get a little money and get marketed. We’ve already got a nice fanbase, and we’ve got a little money saved up. So as long as we keep touring and keep sufficient and get the bills paid, there’s really no reason to get a label going. I mean, we were talking about doing a huge stage show at some point eventually, so we’ll need a label to drop some money on it. But for now, we’re writing the songs we want to write and doing the things we want to do, and just doin’ our thing.

WWM: Was it a promotion thing [with Island]? What was the main deal behind it all?

JP: It had nothing to do with us. We just got dropped or fired.

PN: Just the whole thing with major labels going down and all.

KB: Yeah, they fired like half the staff, too.

WWM: Did your A+R get fired?

JP: Yeah.

WWM: That fucking sucks.

WWM: Do you have any plans to release any more singles off the self-titled album at all?

PN: It’s hard to say. Probably not, though.

JP: I mean if we did, it might be internet only if we have some time.

WWM: Your street single, if you will.

JP: Yeah, but we have a bunch of new songs we’re stoked on. Our next video will probably be something new.

WWM: As far as the remixing aspect of innerpartysystem, who does that? Is it a group or solo effort from one of you?

JP: That’s these guys (points to Patrick and Kris)

PN: Yeah, it’s mostly Kris and I.

WWM: What brings you to certain artists like Jay-Z or Young Jeezy. I know they’re on the mixtape you just put out.

PN: Jared actually did the mixtape.

JP: Yeah, I mean, that’s the stuff that we like. We’re pretty hip-hop oriented. We like everything, though.

WWM: That’s really cool that a band that has that club or European sound would go branch into hip-hop, something that a lot of bands wouldn’t. That’s how [weworemasks] is.

JP: We listen to that stuff most of the time.

KB: Our influences just go so wide.

WWM: I guess I briefly mentioned this outside, but are there any touring plans after Warped Tour? Maybe a small club tour?

JP: I think we’re gonna have an opening slot on a tour yet. We might be going out with Anberlin. And Dredg too.

WWM: Nice, Dredg is coming here soon, with the RX Bandits and Zechs Marquise. So that should be a good time.

KB: RX Bandits!

WWM: When are you guys going to start working on a new album?

PN: We’re kinda always working on it actually.

WWM: Any goals in mind?

PN: Um…Make it awesome?

All: [Laughs]

WWM: Any influences come to mind?

JP: I think when you go on the record to say stuff like that you kinda shoot yourself in the foot. All you can do is make it what you like. That’s another good thing about not having a label. There’s no one screaming at you to make it like this or that, or to make it a single. It could be a really good thing or bad thing.

WWM: That’s about it, wanna add anything to the readers?

JP: It’s hot, come see us at Warped Tour.

PN: Come sweat with us.

KB: Thanks for supporting our band.

that’ll do it for this one. if you haven’t already, be sure to sign up at their brand new website and download their brand new summer mixtape.
