GRIZZLY’S 2015 YEAR-END LISTS

Here we go, folks. My last year end list on the internet. I’m happy to have been a part (the main one) of something so entertaining for a lot of you over the past few years. Thanks to anyone who has ever read one of our year-end lists or listened to any of our playlists that came with it.

Anyway, hit the jump for my year’s best folks!

Peace and love,
Grizzly

2015 was one of the best year’s in music I can remember. 2014 fell flat for a lot of categories, with hip-hop suffering the most. Thanks to a bunch of new AND old artists, this year had a bit of a jump. So hop to, folks!

Honorable Mentions (alphabetical order):

BaronessPurple (I really wish this album came out earlier this year, it’s magnificent. Not enough time to place it anywhere, considering I just listened to it for the first, second and third times in the last two days)

20. Justin BieberPurpose
Biebs is back. Journals was the Prelude we thought it was.

19. Weeknd, TheBeauty Behind the Madness
Haven’t enjoyed a release from Abel in quite sometime, but I appreciate dedicating the entire sound to pop and not teetering like his previous few.

18. mewithoutYouPale Horses
mwY made a strong comeback in rotation with PH. It’s their best album since Brother, Sister.

17. Big SeanDark Sky Paradise
Big Sean finally made a strong studio effort. Love this dude forever, but he’s yet to put out a solid body of work that wasn’t on a mixtape.

16. MiguelWild Heart
Miguel’s rock leanings on Wild Heart really made this album shine.

15. KehlaniYou Should Be Here
Kehlani’s gonna be huge. Her debut is excellent, and one of most most oft-played R&B albums this year.

14. Jamie XX – In Colour
In Colour is the exact mood of album I wanted from Jamie XX all along. “I Know There’s Gonna Be Good Times” is a contender for “song of the year,” too.

13. Rae SremmurdSremmLife
This album dropped in fucking January, and I’m still turning up to it in December. SremmLife 2 coming soon, thanks to the gods of wilin’ out.

12. DaisyheadThe Smallest Light
More 90s rock nostalgia for ya boy. I can’t help myself, I was raised on grunge.

11. FutureDS2
Where yo ass was at, when Future took the rap game over?

10. ASAP RockyAt Long Last ASAP
Flacko is pretty consistent, and A.L.L.A. is his strongest effort to date.

9. Donnie Trumpet & The Social ExperimentSurf
Having Chance around is one of hip-hop’s most fruitful blessings, yo. Surf is just so damn positive, and it’s an uplifting journey, bringing along a lot of characters for some of their best verses (B.o.B., Busta Rhymes, etc) in years.

8. DisclosureCaracal
This album got a lot of shit because it wasn’t Settle. Don’t get me wrong, Settle is miles better, but Caracal is an entirely different beast, and just as enjoyable. “Omen” is better than “Latch” and “Magnets” is better than just about all of it.

7. Vince StaplesSummertime ’06
Tough year for Vince, considering Kendrick HAD TO go and release TPAB, otherwise, this is the rap album of the year. Two discs of introspective, enjoyable and memorable real shit. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

6. Internet, TheEgo Death
Never was a listener of these guys until this year, and I slept – HARD. Ego Death is a pretty dazzling listen, groovy from start to finish and never really skipping a beat.

5. Ghost BathMoonlover
True story: I found out about these guys from a YouTube comment saying “Ghost Bath put out the best metal album of the year.” I listened to Moonlover and instantly fell in love with it. Whether these anons are from North Dakota or China matters none, because this album is a gem.

4. Tame ImpalaCurrents
Kevin Parker and company won me over in 2012 with Lonerism, and Currents ends up being an even better album than expected. One of my most listened to albums this year.

3. Kendrick LamarTo Pimp a Butterfly
Nothing needs to be said about TPAB. KDot dropped the most important “hip-hop” album of the last five years and it won’t even be appreciated until about 5 years from now.

2. DeafheavenNew Bermuda
Album is perfect.

1. TurnoverPeripheral Vision
Only reason Deafheaven isn’t number one is because I probably listened to Peripheral Vision like 400 times this year. This album hit me in my feels real good this year. Plus, I don’t want a predictable ass list. More predictable than it already is, anyway.

Here’s a playlist, yo.
