show recap: the cambiata’s final show [via stranger’s sonata] (july 10, 2009)

so it’s all said and done. one of the better bands around today has officially called it quits. taking a trip down the weworemasks’ lane, the cambiata were our first spotlight [hit the sidebar] here at our permanent home at wordpress. they helped us kickstart a lot of great opportunities, and for that, we’re always grateful.

i’m not sure if many of you read the comments on here or not, but one of our loyal readers ricky clarke (goes by stranger’s sonata) sent us a review of the cambiata’s final show in their hometown.

What happened July 10, 2009, at The Station in Portland, Maine, cannot be repeated, cannot be topped, matched by any band, big or small, that graces its floors.

The Cambiata has already done the impossible and then some – taking twenty five songs from their unprecedented catalog and reenacting them to the best of their abilities – this term is used very loosely, for their live performances are much more exotic and sound much better than their studio counterparts, making them the diamond in the rough in the much overlooked music scene of Portland, Maine.

You read that number right, by the way – the band only took one twenty minute break in their twenty five song set list. Instead of going through all the songs in order, I’ll just mention the songs they DIDN’T play:

Frankenstein
Damaged Luggage
Frantic Like Fiction
Lupine *
Garlands *

* denotes an unreleased song that was put on the Darling disc sold at the show.

But before we get into the craziness, I just want to back up and throw in a shout-out to the opening band – Kid:Nap:Kin. This is a band from Boston that’s slowly making a name for themselves, and is a mind-fuck and a half to watch live, if not solely for its drummer. The three-piece released their second disc last year, called Hush Now, that will get your foot tapping and your head spinning from both its catchiness and its intricacy.

After a solid list from that band, twenty minutes pass by before The Cambiata come onstage and blow the crowd away with not only two tracks from their first disc, but the first two, which are arguably the most intense on the disc. Moulton is back in form as he rips through “Reign Of Apples” and “I Know.” All sixteen combined tracks from “to heal” and their self-titled are sprinkled into the set, but one of the big highlights was the retirement and death of “Shards Of Pornography.”

Twenty five songs, and they never slowed down. Not once. They never let up. Not even during the final song they’d ever play – my personal favorite song of all time, “Roswell.”

A moving, hypnotic, emotional night for all involved parties. Some of the greatest music the world will never hear again.
