show recap: kevin devine at warehouse live in houston, tx (may 10, 2009)

kevin devine’s always a pleasure to see live. he mingles with the crowd very well (cough, as mentioned in our interview cough cough) and i’ve yet to see him frown. he dropped into houston on sunday, which also happened to be mothers day, as well as the night the celtics grabbed game 4 from right underneath the magic’s feet.

anyway, i got there pretty late due to previous mother’s day commitments and i slept on brian bonz and the dot hongs set, as well as miniature tigers. maybe next time, fellas. and for the record, i should probably get into miniature tigers ASAP because for one, i love the band name and for two, one of their t-shirts features the logo from the dharma initiative, and you all [should] recognize my undying love for lost by now. i was unfortunately on a recession venture that night, so the aforementioned shirt was not purchased.

i did catch sarah jaffe, though. although it’s not really my cup of tea, jaffe and her on-stage compadre put on a solid show. i can’t really give you a RIYL, so just head to her myspace and check it out for yourself.

kevin devine came out after a celtics clutch victory and a very short set-up time. his set comprised mostly of songs off of the incredible new album, brother’s blood. all of you are probably too busy being an asshole and haven’t listened to the album quite yet, so i’d recommend doing so very quickly.

even if you aren’t familiar with the newer stuff, kevin’s guaranteed to touch base on a good amount of his past discography. he played an ample amount of material from all of his previous albums, and even treated the crowd to a few gems (see: a cover of elliott smith’s “the biggest lie”)

all in all, it was a great show and a huge redeemer for the weekend after the shitty experience at sneaker pimps.

there’s still a huge chunk of the tour left, so be sure to support kevin when he comes through.

hit the jump for the setlist and a download of kevin devine’s set from ACL in 2007.
